1. What does Novolac Mean?

Novolac is a multi-functional, high cross link density, epoxy matrix. A novolac epoxy coating is the best combination of all the chemical, solvent, and heat resistant epoxies. Historically, Novolac epoxies are very hard, dense, and brittle. The SP-2000 series is a hybrid Novolac epoxy which draws upon the Novolac technology to provide excellent chemical and heat resistance, but is also flexible for the pipe environment.

Conventional epoxies are based on a Biz A technology, which is a difunctional chemical chain, not a multi-functional matrix like SP-2000. Biz A resins are difunctional epoxies whose bond can be penetrated. In contrast, Novolac resins are multi-functional, meaning their cross-link densities are so closely grouped that aggressive species cannot penetrate the matrix. In a system utilizing Novolac epoxies, chemical erosion is impossible. When you invest in SP-2000, a Novolac epoxy technology, you are receiving a premium product. It will yield protection which lasts longer than Biz A protection, at a competitive price.

We are embarking on a new millennium, which requires new technology. Novolac technology is the cutting edge in epoxies today. Superior Environmental Products was the first company in 1990 to develop ambient cured Novolac epoxy coatings, and continues to lead the way into the next generation of high tech protective coatings and linings.

2. How does SP-2000 differ from other epoxies?

As with SP-2000, some other epoxies, like Protecto 401, incorporate the use of ceramics. The significant difference is Superior Environmental has taken a brittle Novolac, and made it into a special blend that not only incorporates alumina oxide ceramics to provide a tough ceramic coating / lining, but it also incorporates other materials to ensure flexibility, superior impact resistance and adhesion, and abrasion resistance. Some other epoxies, like Protecto 401, have not changed (as touted in their literature) since 1981. SP-2000 is on the cutting edge of today's Novolac technology, providing an economical system with superior performance.

3. What does the addition of ceramic mean?

As referenced above, alumina oxide is used as the ceramic base material, and provides excellent wear resistance. The alumina oxides are inert, meaning acids, or other variables, do not affect them. They are very abrasion resistant materials, and allow the coating to endure abrasive environments.

4. What does amine mean?

Amine cured systems are all two component systems requiring a chemical reaction for curing. All reactions of the amine cured epoxies are a two part chemical reaction between A & B that cure at ambient (air) temperatures. An amine cured epoxy coating is hard, tightly bonded, and chemical resistant. It is the most widely used epoxy coatings for maintenance type applications. Other epoxies utilizing the Biz A technology may not meet the criteria of being an amine cured epoxy, thus, they may not be a true Novolac resin based product.
