1.0 Inspection of the Incoming Material
Certain conditions are crucial to assurance of a quality finished product. Inspect all incoming steel and iron product for the following conditions:
- All pipe and fittings should be received bare on the I.D. Fittings or short lengths of pipe (3' or less) previously lined with cement or tar can be sufficiently cleaned for lining, but this should be done on a limited basis due to scheduling constraints for bare product.
- Inspect material for excessive scaling or internal slag or sand inclusions. Surface rusting is acceptable and will be removed during the blasting process.
- Inspect for cracks or holes in the castings.
- During the winter months ( October through April) all material must be received in closed van type trucks or must be fully tarped. Exposure to the metal material to road salt used by the highway departments for snow and ice removal will contaminate the metal, penetrating into the porous substrate. Once contaminated, the metal cannot be successfully lined. Any material not properly covered will be rejected.
- Any material exhibiting any of the above defects will be rejected and returned to the supplier at supplier expense.
2.0 Preparation of the Metal for Processing
- All product is to be blasted using steel grit media to achieve a 1 - 3 mil anchor profile. Sand blasting is not acceptable due to the dust contamination residue associated with it and the unacceptable anchor profile.
- The entire interior surface of the item to be SP-2000W lined shall be struck with the blast media via compressed air nozzles to sufficiently remove any rust, scale or oxides.
- Acceptable appearance of steel product shall be that of a near white metal or SSPC - SP 10 surface condition.
- Ductile iron shall exhibit a light gray color with only slight darker grey "staining" permissible.
3.0 Application of the SP-2000W Ceramic Epoxy Lining on Pipe
- Application of the SP-2000W shall begin within 8 hours of completion of the blast preparation . If any surface flash rusting is present, the item must be re-blasted.
- Pipe must be rotated during spray application to avoid sagging or "candle waxing" of the lining. Rotation shall continue until lining is capable of "hanging" to the pipe wall without sagging or running.
- Application area must be dry, free from excess dust and temperatures should not be less than 50 degrees F.
- Application in the bell and spigot areas should be limited to 10-15 mils to avoid restriction that will cause difficulty with insertion of the spigot end into the bell ot that may interfere with proper gasket function.
4.0 Application of the SP-2000W Ceramic Epoxy Lining on Fittings
- Application of the SP-2000W Ceramic Epoxy on fittings shall be done in the same manner as pipe, the only exception being that the fittings are not rotating. Instead, the fittings are hand rotated approximately 180 degrees every 5-10 minutes to avoid sagging of the lining.
- The rotating procedure will continue for approximately ½ hour, or until the lining is cured sufficiently to "hang" without sagging or running.
- Application area must be dry, free from excess dust and temperatures should not be less than 50 degrees F.
- Lining material should not be applied to flange faces. Application in the bell and spigot areas should be limited to 10-15 mils to avoid restriction that will cause difficulty with proper insertion of the spigot end into the bell or that may interfere with proper gasket function.
5.0 Inspection of Finished SP-2000W Ceramic Epoxy Lined Pipe and Fittings
- Millage shall be tested using a magnetic thickness guage, properly calibrated, with a nominal thickness of 40 mils and a minimum of 35 mils in the barrel areas, and 10-15 mils in the bell and spigot areas.
- All barrel areas shall be tested with a high voltage spark test or "holiday detection unit" at a minimum of 4,000 volts, per ASTM, NACE and SSPC standards. There shall be no pinholes detected. Any voids detected can be repaired using the same material as was originally applied to the pipe or fitting.
- All bell and spigot areas shall be tested, per ASTM, NACE and SSPC standards, at 67.5 volts with no pinholes allowed. Any voids shall be repaired using the same material as was originally applied to the pipe or fitting, then the item should be re-tested for holidays.
- Documented test results shall be maintained during the inspection process with each item identified by mark or "tag" number. Data shall be recorded showing the mark number, date of inspection, identity of the inspector, and results of the test.
- If required by the specifications or the purcahse order, a certified copy of the test results shall accompany each shipment.
6.0 Loading and Handling Instructions
- As with any lining material, SP-2000W Ceramic Epoxy Lined material should not be lifted internally with the use of hooks, forks or chains. All lined pipe and fittings should be lifted by external means only.
- Any damaged areas should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any grease or dirt, then repairs should be made using the same material as was originall applied to the pipe or fitting using the available repair kits.
